B20 knocking only when warm

I was hoping to get some ideas on a mysterious noise coming from the engine on my 1800ES. Relevant facts:
1) The noise is not harmonic, but increases somewhat erratically with rpm.
2) The noise is NOT AT ALL there at cold idle, but comes in gradually after 3 minutes or so.
3)It doesn't seem to come from the valves--no louder while running with valve cover off.
4) The noise doesn't go away when I take off any of the plug wires.
5) The fiber cam gear is O.K.--just tore it down yesterday, with some replacement steel timing gears in hand, but decided not to replace the old ones.

This really has me stumped. I've considered the following culprits, but I'm not sure how to check these easily:

1) Alternator going bad
2) Oil pump
3) Other engine (yikes!)

I've had other B18's, B20's, and B21's--never heard anything like this!

Help please.

Tom
