Ugly sunroof problem 700 1988

Looking for ideas. My wife's 88 744 power sunroof is stuck. One rear corner is down. The other is up. It's fully closed. The switch works and the motor runs a tiny bit in each direction. The roof goes up a tiny bit (1/8 inch?) but won't drop down, or pop up, or slide. It's pretty well thoroughly screwed.
Friendly advice has mainly been along the lines of, get a replacement unit that works, complete, with tracks, panel, etc., and rip this one out of there, not worrying too much about what breaks.
Honestly I wouldn't worry about it at all, and just live with the thing broken in the closed position... except it lets a lot of water in, and I can't get to the drains to clear them if it's stuck closed. Taping it up already proved to be a poor course of action. :(
Advice and been-there-done-that's would be appreciated. BTW the headliner in the thing is already destroyed so there's no real worry there!
Thanks in advance.
