repacking wheel bearings 200

Like to hear from all the experts on proper front wheel bearing maintience. I can't imagine pulling off the front hubs unless I was changing rotors. For a guick lube I usually just pull outside bearing out, wipe off old grease and repack with new grease. I never considered handpacking the bearing until I looked at the Bentley manual. The question I have are. What's the point of filling the cup half full of grease? Should the cavity be fully packed with grease or for the most part be left empty? I may just pull off wheels again and handpack outside bearing and fill cavity.
