940 Cooling fan problem BEFORE the Relay 900

I have a 94, non-turbo 940, in which the cooling fan stopped working. I thought it was and auxillary fan--turns out to be the ONLY fan. Anyway, a few months ago as I exited my car, I noticed a buzzing noise under the hood. It was obviously the relay in front of the battery. Tapping it did nothing so I disconnected the battery. When I came back and reconnected the battery, the noise was gone.

I never connected the 2, but ever since then, my car overheats in traffic. Naturally, no fan. Shorting out the thermostatic switch on the radiator does not indicate that the fan is good or bad! I took the relay out and hot wired low and high speed terminals to the battery and it ran fine.

I assumed it was the relay, until I tapped off the hot wire to the relay and found no power. ALL FUSES ARE GOOD!

Now, I am trying to pull the fuse/relay board, but cannot get that stupid panel with the cigarette lighter out. What's the trick? Better yet, has anyone else traced this problem down?

I am an excellent mechanic and former R & D electronic technician, so feel comfortable tearing things apart---EXCEPT an old wiring harness.

ALL HELP WELCOMED.

I have installed a temporary switch so I can turn the fan on in traffic. I can only imagine what a repair shop would charge to fix this problem.
