My '93 940 nonturbo (auto trans)has developed what I think is an unusual idle problem. Several weeks ago I was having a problem wherein the car would intermittently stall out as I rolled through stop signs; braking down till the car was almost stopped, then lifting off the brake petal- at this point the idle dipped below 500 rpm and the car died. It would start right back up and not happen again for a day or two. I took it to a volvo-specialty shop and they cleaned the throttle body. It no longer has the stalling problem, but now I am getting an intermittenly high idle (perhaps it was there all along, but I never noticed). When I start driving the car the idle is at 750 in park (P) or neutral (N). After I drive for a while and bring the car to a stop, the idle is now about 1300 in P or N. If I turn off the ignition and start the car back up, it idles at 750. I can drive at low speed (below 50 mph) and the idle will still be set at 750 when I come to a stop, but go over 50 mph and the idle will be at 1300 when I stop. Turn off the ignition and restart the car, and I'm back at 750. I have replaced the throttle body motor with no effect. The throttle switch on the throttle shaft appears to be functioning correctly; when I mannipulate the throttle with the engine off, I can hear it click as the throttle fully closes.
Any ideas? Is there some type of speed related malfunction of a temperature sensor that is telling the computer to kickup to a higher idel speed? I'd appreciate any suggestions.
