Alternator Bolt dropped out (maybe I shouldn't pay my mechanic with beer?) 200 1985

I went to start my '85 240 last night, and noticed an obvious vibration with accompanying clatter noise. When my mechanic came out to investigate, he found the alternator was missing a long 5/16" bolt, which he did retrieve from somewhere down there. Since the threads were shot and it was almost midnight, we had to find a bolt from AutoZone that wasn't quite right, but it got me home. He's since replaced that with a self threaded thing he cut to fit, and we're going to put the correct bolt on this weeknd. Since he has been under the hood quite a bit lately, (new accessory bushings, A/C parts, alternator brushes etc.) I'm wondering if this wasn't due to normal wear & tear. He put something on incorrectly 2 months ago when replacing my brake calipers & rotors, and a horrible squeal alerted me before too much damage was done, but I'm starting to get nervous!!!
