a very stuck 740 wagon rear seat 700 1991

My wife's 740 wagon has the "split" rear bench seat... there's a single passenger seat on the passenger side + a double seat behind the driver & over the hump. The big seat works fine. The small seat is stuck in the upright position because the release lever doesn't release it. I suspect that there is a wire inside the cushion that has pulled away somehow (kind of like the way the volvo hood latch cable pulls away in a few places & then stops working --- or not). I managed to force the latch with a screwdriver but I'm guessing that the hog rings have to come off for inspection. I have a daunting feeling about the whole thing. Like... I want to pull apart the seat cushion in my wife's car? And impale myself on hog rings. HELP!
