Odd non-start problem....please help!

Hi there folks.

last night I went to start my '85 240 and it cranked, but wouldn't catch, and I though my battery had been drained, but the lights were bright, then I noticed something when trying to start it. As the motor turned, the electrical turned on and off with the cranking of the engine. Literally, the dinger for the seat belt, the light in the dash, all of it, would turn on and off with the cranking of the engine, and after a few cranks, it would stop altogether. This seems like it's gotta be something specific. Any suggestions or further questions?

Thanks kindly,

Tim
