No start problem - Electrically challenged 200 1990

Just had an issue with my favorite wagon:
1. Turned the key to start and heard a loud pop from under the engine.
2. Car would not start. Interior & dash lights were out.
3. Opened hood and found the cover on the battery fill holes lying loose (possibly this was the loud pop?)

No Start Symptoms are:
1. Interior & dash lights are lit with key in ignition until I turn the key engage the starter, then lights go out and nothing.
2. Remove the key and after a pause of about 2 sconds the lights come back on.

Can anyone help with suggestions of where to begin looking? I am electrically challenged and need to get home & let the dog out, go to work etc.
