cleaning crud

hello just pulled the water pump to replace. and man a bunch of crud and dirt.just under the water pump, all over the wiring harness and such.the timing belt looks good and no oil in there.just crud built up over the years its my new old 87 245 n.a. anyway will clean up, but what to clean the alternator with. not the inside of the alternator but the outside of it. i put a baag over it when i degrease the motor. thanks alot. 85 244 163.000 86 244 107.000 87 245 broken odo.
