muffler emergency 200

After 200K the exhaust system is giving up the ghost. The exhaust pipe between the two mufflers sheered in two, and the rear muffler basically is about to fall off. I had my eye on that pipe as it was deteriorating and have been waiting for the time/money continuum to fall into alignment in order to buy one of the $90 exhaust kits from ebay.

This is actually my girlfriend's '88, and she'll need to keep driving it. I'd like to not be forced into buying a much more expensive kit locally. I'm wondering if it's safe to drive (she's got a half-hour commute) with the exhaust coming straight out of the first muffler. And if not, is there a quick solution that will hold us over a few weeks until an exhaust kit arrives from ebay or fcp groton? I have noticed that they sell a bendable type of exhaust pipe at Pep Boys. Since really the only problem is the pipe itself and not either of the mufflers, will this work for my problem in the short run?
