Regardless of why your new cable needs adjusting, Don Foster has given you a good description of the theory. I'll admit this type of cable adjustment is not immediately obvious. But you'll never get a better explanation.

So just do it. But carefully. Hook it back up and see how it shifts. If it's shifting too late (too high a speed), the cable is too tight. Adjust it per Don's instructions,but count the number of "flats" on the nut you tighten to actually move the sheath the sheath (not the nut that you back off for clearance).

Try 6 flats at first, for example. Then drive it for a day. Then maybe another 6 flats. Too much? Back it off 4 flats. The point is you need some reference to base the adjustment on. Just tweaking and hoping, then cursing won't help much.
