speedometer quit 200 1981

I was merrily driving along the other morning and the speedo suddenly died. The cable was replaced just about 6-7 months ago. I pulled the cable off the back of the cluster, jacked up the car and ran it in gear. I didn't feel the end of the cable moving. Is this a relatively common failure? How difficult is it to replace the cable, and should I get one from a junker, or new?

Thanks,
Jeff
