91 240 wgn headlight problem 200 1991

first off i leave the headlight switch on all the time. lights always on while driving. problem started with lights flicking off momentarily then back on. this happened a couple of times. This progressed to lights staying off untill i manually turned off switch then back on. this happened 4 or 5 times untill lights went out for good. now all i have is high beam if i hold hi beam switch. I looked through my manual for a solution to this with no luck. When turning light switch on and off i do here a clicking coming from the area behind the radio.
Any help would be appreciated.
