Definitely check the other end where it screws into the gearbox or o/d. Maybe it has just worked loose.
If it is broken:
Trev29 mentioned different lengths. Trans with o/d also requires a longer cable than the four speed. Don't know if that's the same cable as for the auto;
Easy to replace. There are a couple of brackets to loosen, one under the car and one on the fiewall. Perhaps the hardest part is getting the grommet in place and that's not too difficult.
