replacing Voltage regulator brushes

In trying to replace the brushes on my Bosch regulator I cannot get off the old ones. One style of regulator has the brush wires come up and bend over to terminals beside the brush block. Others have the brush wires straight up and crimped and soldered atop the block. I have done the former type, but the latter I cannot get the brusheds to release after heating the solder joints. Even resorted to a torch on a non working VR. They must be crimpted AND soldered? What is the trick?
Also to ease removal of VR assy from back of alternator, am replacing phillips head screws with hex head bolts. Never enough room to get the screw driver in there, bolts should be easier.......
