87 240 Cold Start Problem 200 1987

I recently bought an 87 240, very nice shape. When you start the car, it dies a couple seconds after it fires off about half the time. The other half of the time it will stay running (usually when its a little warmer outside), but when you put it in gear it dies. Also turning on the AC or anything to bog down the engine will kill it too. When it goes into gear and stays running, it acts like its fuel starved for a couple of seconds then its fine. I dont believe its the AMM, but I could be wrong. Also, should I hear the fuel pump run when I turn the ignition on, or does it just run when the engine is actually operating. Thanks for your help.
