240 Shifter on M41 140-160

The M41 J-Type I found to replace the AT in my "71 142 comes with a remote shifter. The extended cover is the aluminum tube type - not the steel rod ,nor the elongated carapace variety. As it's not original to the car it is coming out of, so I don't know its true origin. Question: if I decide to keep the remote shifter cover, rather than putting on a short cover for a long shifter, could I use the 240 shifter with the momentary contact OD button switch in the top with this cover? I'm trying to save myself an extra trip to the boneyard, an hour away, by pulling the 240 shifter on the same visit I pull the tranny. I'm aware I would have to modify the tunnel.
