why do cars always break? dumb engine... 200

So just as I'm finishing up fixing my girlfriend's 240, mine stops working right. While she was driving on the highway today, the engine started shaking and missing. Now, it will start up ok, but the idle is erratic and even when revved, there is a very noticeable miss and shake. What makes this happen so suddenly? I'm not quite sure where to start looking for the problems, since I've never had this one before. Thanks yet again
