Instrument Panel Lights 700 1988

When my 1988 740 wagon has been sitting outside in sub freezing weather at night and I start it up, the instrument panel lights do not come on and the electronic gauges are not working. However both turn signal lights are lit as is the bright light indicator even though the bright lights are not on. The headlights and tail lights work fine. As soon as the interior of the car warms up a little, the gauges and instrument panel lights function again and the turn signal and headlight indicators function correctly. This only happens when the car has cooled to a below freezing temperature. One obvious solution would be to move to a climate that never goes below freezing. I hope you may be able to suggest a better one.
