transmission hard engagement 700 1990

Have '90 740 with AW70L tranny. When selecting from park, reverse or neutral to any forward gear, I get a hard engagement. When the trans is hot there is also a hestitation before it will engage. Have replaced the servo O-rings and the kickdown cable is adjusting to the point of being slack. Thinking possibly the kickdown (boost) valve is supplying high pressure when it shouldn't (leaking).
I can imagine that this can also be caused by a leaking or worn check ball. It shifts OK and everything else is normal except for a bit of a hard lock up.
The trans was extremely clean when I took the pan down. No particles escept for very small amounts of black iron on the magnets. Any ideas?
