foray into new series

Ok, I've been a confirmed 2 and 7 series guy for many years. Got a raise, looking to upgrade so have some questions. A friend of mine who owns a car dealership that specializes in Volvos has several. I haven't even seen any of these cars yet but will tomorrow. Just looking for things to look for and keep in mind. Keep in mind mine is an 89 740 GL in pretty good condition mechanically and looks good in and out. 208K miles. He has a 94? 940 Turbo that he says is immaculate. Not sure of the miles but he said it's a fantastic Volvo that I can get for 3500 difference. He has a 91 940 that he's working on (only 71K miles!!!) that I can get for about $1k and a 92 960 that I can get for $2500. I've read the forums and have heard about the porous blocks etc. What do I need to look for on these models. I know to check the service records etc. How long, realistically, can you expect a turbo to last. Oh, he also has an 88 740 turbo too. Plus he has several 16 valve 740's. Know about the interference engine on those and to check the timing belts. Anything else I need to look for?
Thanks
Ben
