142 Running like s*** 140-160

Colin, I'd urge you to check engine oil condition before trying to solve the starting problem, which may be something trivial. That the engine was cranked a great deal, and the key turned many times, suggests that a LOT of gas may have been pushed through the engine. Does the oil dipstick smell strongly of gasoline, and is the level higher than full?
Checking spark is basic. What may be new to you is the FI system trigger points, located in the body of the ignition distributor. They may need to be cleaned with alcohol and the faces burnished with a piece of card.
I can't think of anything else offhand.
