Pop the distributor cap and make sure the distributor is turning while cranking.
Your description sounds like a progressive timing gear failure to me.
Also make sure that the distributor rotor is pointing the right way with
#1 at top dead center. It should be pointing to either #1 or #4. If it is
anywhere else that confirms the timing is off.
