changed blower fan in 89 245, now no defrost, only floor!! 200 1989

We changed the blower fan and now all I have is powerful floor heat with wimpy defrost, it seems there is no compression on the little plungers that open and close the baffles... The floor registers open and close, but there is no change when i engage the defrost button. Also, does anyone have a creative way to fasten a slightly damaged peice of that vent tubing (floor exhaust)? It's a real bugger to reattach and the slightest touch makes it fall out...
