Severe engine vibration 740 GL 2.0L 700 1990

My 740 B200F has just developed a severe engine vibration, rocking on its mounts by about 5cm (2in) at idle, and idling about 700rpm (usually about 1000rpm). Depressing the throttle lowers the revs and the engine stalls. It can't be driven. No ECU reports. Sufficient spark, but plugs are oiley.
I don't really know if the problem is fuel system, combustion vapour system, electrical or mechanical. I haven't yet had the head off, but suspect head gasket failure. Before I try this, can anyone confirm head gasket failure is the probable cause, or have any other ideas what the cause is?

Thanks
Kev
