Transmission shifting rough or not at all

Hello, finally, Red Wagon (1978 245 DL) is on the road. My gratitude to Rob Funnekotter of the Ottawa Volvo Club and to the people at Young's Garage. It turned out that the car needed a fuel pump and a timing belt, in addition to some carb adjustment.
I drove the car for the first time yesterday and notice that it is rough shifting between first and second and then it doesn't want to shift from second to third. However, if I take my foot off the gas, it shifts into third and if I am careful and let it coast for a bit and am slow at giving it gas, it'll keep on going in third. The tranny fluid does not smell burnt so I think the transmission is all right but I wonder how I can resolve this shifting problem. Would a tranny flush help? Putting in synthetic oil? Adding a transmission additive? Suggestions appreciated. Thank-you from Red Wagon.
