My 940 problem is a vibration that's felt more than heard. The biggest improvement was dumping the aftermarket mounts for OEs. I did the tranny mount first. It helped some, but the OE motor mounts really made the difference.
My current thinking is that it may originate in the tranny, which is why I asked about an A/T. I "feel" that it's an inherent vibration that is now isolated from the body to a fairly acceptable level, but in no way eliminated. Below is an updated version of my most recent post, as a summary to date:
____________________________________
Engine (RPM) Related Vibration — "Last Call"
Symptoms:
> Not Driveline related (Can be produced in Neutral)
> Originally obvious at idle (better now, but...)
> Became very obvious when put in gear (holding brake, as at a stop light)
> Increases with RPM.
> Feel "buzz" in pedal at shift points around 2700 ± 500rpm (pedal cable taut)
> At a steady 65-70 it's in your bones as much or more than your ears
Parts Replaced:
> Tranny-to-Exhaust bracket (Home-brew but does the same job at the same place)
> Driveshaft Center Bearing and Mount (Volvo OE) 130k preventive maintenance
> Motor Mounts ("German OEM") Raised engine up off X-member, but little improvement
> Tranny Mount ("Scan-Tech") This and MMs subdued the vibration effect only slightly
> Harmonic Balancer (Volvo OE) Smoother — sort of "clipped the peaks", but still there
> Replaced Motor and Tranny mounts (after 4 months) with Volvo OE (HUGE improvement!!!)
If the engine (or A/T???) had been this smooth back in March (when I got this car), I might not have noticed the vibration — at first. But having lived through this "evolution", I know it is still present, even though it has been very well "muffled" by the OE mounts.
Is it something inherent to the B230 (my B230?)? After nearly 40 years of 4-cylinder Volvos (mostly manual tran), it's unexpected and unpleasant. But others have had the problem too, according to my BrickBoard "Search" efforts. A couple of years ago, Tim Kline (740) wrote posts that sounded just like mine. But I never saw any resolution. So unless something comes from this post, I'll live with it and hope it gets no worse.
P.S. Anybody interested in some hardly used, cut-rate "look-alike" mounts real cheap?
