Dash Padding 140-160

Can anyone tell me how to remove the dash padding on a "72 142 without damaging it? I have a badly cracked one in my fixer-upper and access to one without cracks, though probably brittle, in a parts car. The only possible reference to this subject I can find in my Manual is in relation to removing the instrument cluster, which basically says after dropping the steering collumn: "Remove the outer impact protections. These are removed by pulling them straight out." I doubt this even refers to the dash padding.
