brake failure warning 200 1986

My wife was picking up the kids from school in the '86 245. After sitting parked on a incline she placed the car in drive, moved up a little bit then applied the brakes. The brakes went further to the floor than normal and the brake failure light came on. She also thought that there was a grinding noise attending all of this (but I have to say she is sensitive to sounds that cars make). When I arrived the brake failure light was still on but the pedal presure felt normal. I pumped the brakes a time or two and the light went off. Also checked the fluid level and it was in the maximum range. I saw no leaks from any of the wheels so I drove it around the block. Everything seemed fine and I even tried a panic stop with no problems. Any ideals? Car has 277,00 miles on it but has been maintained religously.

Thanks
