Center vents blow different temps 700

I have an '88 745GLE (turbo). It has manual climate control (the sliding-style temp and vent controls). When I move the temperature slider to mid-range, the temperature coming out of the left center vent remains _cold_, but the air from the right center vent is warm. ?? Is this normal, or is something out of adjustment?

If I move the slider all the way to the right (max heat), the left center vent will finally "catch up" to the temp of the right center vent.

Also, can I upgrade to a newer model manual climate control with the rotating dials instead of the sliding selectors?

Thanks,
Adam
