Just bought a nice 93 240 w/ 90K miles on it. In great shape except had a "tick" which I guessed would be taken care of during the 90K servicing (valve clearance check/timing belt change, etc.) which I had done shortly after purchase. At servicing, my mechanic suggested replacing the cam shaft as it was a bit "scratched up". After all was done, the "tick" was a little better but now 1K miles later it is back. It is more noticeable after the engine warms up and I can hear it with windows rolled up in the car. (Have to keep the heater blower on #3 to drown it out.) The mechanic said that the valves need a more time to "settle in" since there is a new cam shaft and shims. He said he'd suggest checking the clearance again at the next oil change. Does this make any sense or is he giving me a line?? If fixing the valve clearance doesn't take care of things what might have to be done? Also, if the car performs well should I just learn to live with it or will I be doing damage to the engine? Why would the cam shaft be scratched at 90K--relatively young for a 240? Any suggestions about oil--should I change to synthetic or put in an additive? Thanks guys. Fix-it-mom
