Howdy, this is a new thing for me, so pardon me if I misspeak. I've become a volvo owner for the first time two months ago, -- a '92 240 wagon with a manual, 5-speed M47 tranny. I am experiencing vibrations via the shifter, and a couple of weeks ago I decided to nip that in the bud before winter hits by replacing all the relevant bearings in the driveshaft. Sooo... armed with $150 in bearngs, universal joints, and rubber couplings, I removed the driveshaft and found that the cause of the problem was NOT the items I was prepared to fix. The problem is this: the tail end of the M47 has fifth gear housing that ends in the output (drive) flange onto which the driveshaft bolts. That flange is (for lack of a better word) LOOSE. It wobbles and demonstrates an alarming amount of play. Since the transmission shifts well and otherwise functions just fine aside from the vibrations, my first guess is that there are bearings surrounding this output flange that have gone to shite. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to get the damed thing off without removing the fifth gear housing, or even worse, the whole transmission. In short, there isn't a nut holding the flange on to the transmission or a bolt onto which a nut would fit, and all of the photos and exploded diagrams I can find show a nut holding the flange in place. Anybody out there in brickland have an answer for me?
