Looking in my WorldPac parts catalog, I see what you mean. The Bosch re-man number is same for 75-84. Then in 85 something changes. The 86-87 unit shows another p/n and says "direct drive. The 88-93 unit, another new p/n, says "permanent magnet with gear reduction".


Hmmmmm.. The Volvo parts book is a little different. For B21, ,B23 and B230F, 1976-87, it calls for p/n 5003564-1 and 1.1 Kw. Then in 1988 and on it shows the same p/n but says 1.4Kw. I suspect that the 1.4 Kw unit will retro-fit OK, since a big change would mean a change in the block casting molds and processes. Wiring to the newer unit could be heavier.

I have both an 86 and an 88, and there is a difference in the sound of the starter.
