Computer Question, 1986 240DL Wagon Standard Transmission 195k 200

I presume that when I disconnect the battery ground before doing work on my "new" wagon that the volatile memory of the computer is lost. Will this brick be drivable with the default settings? Is it necessary to use a particular driving technique to teach the computer about my brick? How long should it take for the computer to learn about my brick?
