Pre-ignition /detonation/pinging/rattling is bad for the engine because the fuel is igniting as the pistons are still on there way up in the compression stroke. You can basically blow a hole in your piston.

To avoid this preignition you can try a higher octane gas which is less likely to ignite before the spark. Or you can try retarding the timing. Or maybe try a cooler spark plug.
