dome light issues 200

My girlfriend's '88 has a dome light that works when you turn it on manually, but it doesn't come on when any of the the doors are opened, and of course it doesn't do that cool delay thing after you get out. If you set the switch to either side, it turns the light on but that's about it. It stays on until you turn it off again. It doesn't work differently from one side of the switch to the other.

How is the system set up, and what is the likely cause of the light not going on when you open a door?
