No power and pinging like you wouldn't believe 700 1988

I have a 88 745 T. It has been running great for the past while and then suddenly today, it would barely accelerate and when it did, it sounded like a diesel from the excessive pinging. I tried putting my foot into it more and that didn't make it any better - even at virtually no gas, it was pinging so bad that I had to go home and take my wife's car to work.

With pinging that bad, I have to assume that it is a fuel delivery problem . The fuel has to be getting there because it runs but it seems as though it is no where near enough. Does this sound reasonable? Does anyone have an approach to suggest? I will be working on it this weekend.

As for recent work to it - there hasn't been any. I had an emission test in September and it passed no problem. About 9 months ago I replaced the FPR and that was the end of a lot of problems that I had previously.
