rumbling start - new battery? 200

hello all
i have a quick question about starting my 1990 volvo 240. about 70% of the time it starts without a problem. sometimes, however, it takes about 10 seconds or so of holding the key in the start position before it does. or, i'll have to stop and try it again and then it will start. i'm wondering if my battery is getting low or if it may be something else? the car always start and i've only had to try three times once or twice but it just seems to take a bit too long. any suggestions out there in volvoland?
