radiator plug 200

Okay, so we're driving home last night and the temp needle shoots up into the red, get home, it was only about 2 miles and needle was just below red, and I check the fluid level on the radiator and it's dry. So I figure I'll fill it up with water to limp it in to the garage in the morning, and it starts pouring out of a hole on the top left side of the radiator. Had the car towed in to the garage in the morning and they replaced the sensor/plug? and filled her full of fluid and all seems better.

Question: does this kind of stuff happen much or was this sort of a freak of nature, and is there anything else I should be looking out for that could have caused this to happen, and/or do you think we did any major damage to the car. The engine bay didn't seem that overly hot when we got home that night.
