Parts and fluids

Yes, it is me. I had to chuck all my posts since... I don't know, 1998, to change my nick because some guy wouldn't leave me alone.

Anyway.

Oil Choices
My personal oil choices are 4. The reason is, I have two synthetic choices, and 2 non-synthetic choices.

My synthetic choice (and the usual oil that I run in both 940s)
1. Mobil 1
2. Pennzoil Synthetic

My non-synthetic oils of choice
1. Castrol GTX (00 Explorer, one 240 and 740 run this oil)
2. Valvoline

The reason I like all of them? I'm not sure. Part reputation, and partly, because I have run both synthetic and non-synthetic alike, for many miles. Castrol GTX is truly an oil that will keep your engine clean. And of course the synthetics do the same thing as well. Valvoline is decent, but it is my fallback choice in case I can't find a suitable deal on Castrol GTX. After that, I'll go to Havoline Supreme. Also I have used, and was very satisfied with, Pennzoil synthetic blend. I would use that oil again, but I didn't want to break it down into synthetic, part-synthetic, non-synthetic... you get the picture.

Brake pads

With respect to brake pads, I usually use Remsa Gold pads. I'm not sure where these are obtained but I believe they are obtainable through parts stores. The reason? The Remsa Gold kits (you have to get the "kit" version in order for the hardware to come with it) come with all the brake hardware, and the pads, for less than $50 wholesale, for 940 fronts. And the rears are super cheap. Like $20, with hardware. They are a decent mix of durability and good stopping. And also, the overall quality is excellent, whereas some aftermarket pads are basically, pretty junky.

However, my favorite pads to drive on, are the Volvo pads. Unfortunately they are rather costly, but they sure do stop the car like it hit something. And they are the filthiest pads on the planet, so clean you wheels a lot.

I would not be qualified to discuss Mintex or PBR, since I have never (knowingly) installed or used them.

Synthetic ATF

I use it. Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

However, in one 940 (200k miles) I am using Castrol GTX Dexron III/Mercon. Which is what I would use in any other car with non-synthetic ATF. Before switching to synthetic, it might help to run fresh non-synthetic for a week or two, to clear out and suspend debris in new fluid. Then chuck it and replace with synthetic. When I do that kind of thing, I usually just buy a case of Shell ATF and run that through (inexpensive) and then switch to synthetic.

My black 940 wagon is just about ready to be changed -- around 25k. I can tell you, the fluid looks and smells brand new. Hardly distinguishable from new at all.

Brake fluid
I use Castrol brake fluid. I'm not a synthetic brake fluid user. I do flush it every year, which I think is the most important thing for a healthy brake system. Also good for ABS systems.
