Whacky M46 overdrive problems...Help! 700 1989

My overdrive has all of a sudden started to shift in and out at random, and not only in 4th gear either. Sometimes it will shift into OD in 3rd or even 2nd gear. I was in a hurry to get back to school, so I decided to go for the quick fix and simply pull the relay. The car still shifts into OD on it's own! How is this possible if they relay isn't there? What's more puzzling is the switch isn't even hooked up-the PO ripped the entire shift knob off at some point and the bare wires were hanging out of the top when I got the car. I simply wrapped them with electrical tape and shoved them down inside the shift lever. Can anyone give me an idea of what to look for when I try to go about fixing this? I want to get it done tomorrow (I have to drive it back up to school on Monday). I don't want to drive much longer with it like this as I'm sure randomly shifting in and out of OD without using the clutch at 60 mph is very bad for it.

Thanks,

Matthew
