Wheel compatability/ brake problems!? 200 1988

I Purchesed my 1988 Volvo 240 DL about a year and a Half ago. It came with virgo wheels with regular tires mounted on them and a set of almost new snow tires unmounted. Last winter I wanted to put the snow tires on but I did not want to have to change the tires on my Virgos twice a year. I bought a cheap set of generic steal wheels (non-volvo) and mounted the studed tires on them. I ran them all winter and put my regular tires and wheels back on. In June I took the car in for a front brake job and I was informed that the brakes pades were not weraring evenly. They ended up replacing the bearing race, clapers and rotors. I'm know wondering if this problem was caused by the generic wheels I used for my snow tires or if that stuff would have worn anyway. What else might explain the uneven where of the brakes?
Thanks
