Clicking Is Not Piston Slap? 200 1985

I've owned this 245DL non-turbo (B230F engine) with automatic transmission for one year. Since I've owned it, it has always made a click-click-click noise. I thought this was piston slap, but a friend told me it may not be. Here are the symptoms: the click-click-click is constant on start-up, after the engine is warm, and on driving or pulling the throttle lever. I isolated the problem to the #2 cyliner. When I remove the fuel injector wire for #2 cylinder, the sound disappears. However, when I remove the spark plug wire, the sound persists. The sound persists unchanged with the disconnection of every other cylinder. When I attach a timing light, the light flashes 1:1 with the clicking.

Compression is in the 182-190 range.
