240 deisel 200

Anyone know about the 240 deisels? I've heard it was a VW engine, and a six...and it wasn't anywhere near volvo quality. Some people are starting a Biodeisel co-op near where I live (Bainbridge Island, WA) and though I love the thought of renewable fuel I don't think I could ever part with a 240. What years were they made? Are they really as lousy as a couple people have told me? Thanks!
