I have a 1992 240 automatic which has recently started giving me a hard time in the morning. It (usually) starts up fine, but when I try to move the shift lever out of park, it won't budge. After a complicated dance which involves such moves as revving the engine and pushing hard on the break, the button finally depresses and the lever moves. Then it's fine for the rest of the day. I've noticed that the colder it is outside, the less willing the transmission is to leave park. Much like myself.
Also, I've noticed when it's in park and I step on the brake (after the lever has decided to move), I can hear the neutral safety switch clicking on and off. It has always been quiet before, but recently the little plastic housing that has PRND21 on it has become cracked, so maybe that's why I'm hearing it now.
I don't know if this other problem is related, but any thoughts are welcome. What happens is, from time to time, I'll turn the key and NOTHING will happen. Absolutely nothing. So I lift the hood, disconnect and reconnect the negative terminal, and the car starts right up. Sometimes the car will go a month or more without doing this; other times, it will do it three or four times straight. No rhyme or reason to it.
I replaced the neutral safety switch this past February.
