Stange noise

I have a 1988 740 gle that i Just bought. It is great except for 1 annoyance, and that is that after i reach say 45mph, it starts to make a kind of like a whining/humming sound. it will get louder and sometimes it will stop for a second but it always comes back. It is not rpm related so i think it may be wind causinf 1 of the pieces of the front-air dam to vibrate. Any 1 have a similar problem/solution???
