Heater Problem ('92 940) 900 1992

ive got a 940GL wagon its the 1992 model and i just discovered this forum so i thought i'd aska quick question.

for about 5 years the heater fan (interior heater) has only worked on setting 5. on anything else its like having it set on 0. this is perticularly annoying in winter as it i need to frequently demist my windshield instead of having a constant draught onto it.

my mechanic said i'd need to remove the dash to get at it (i know... not an easy job) but once thats done its fairly simple.

anyone got any easier ideas or a quick walk thru of how to get access to what might be causing it?

thanks a lot.
