Losing power intermittently - shift-up light flashes 200 1989

Every so often, my 89 240DL loses power without warning - it basically cuts out for a couple of seconds then seems to get back to normal. The funny thing is that the shift up light flashes on and off while this happens. Is this some sort of diagnostic deal or is it just a weird electrical thing?

I do get a check engine light sometimes - when I pull the codes it tells me there is a problem with the air mass meter. Is there a way of testing this before I replace this - over the years I've learned to be very distrustful of diagnostic codes!

Thanks

Rod
