The impulse sensor (aka Crankshaft Position Sensor, Engine Speed Sensor, RPM Sensor) could indeed be bad. It could have something to do with the fact that the wires inside are bad or corroded, and the shifting of the wire caused it to function again.

The aftermarket part is approximately $35 (but probably $50 from the mechanic) and labor is rather insignificant. That way, if the mechanic breaks the bracket that the sensor mounts into, the shop will have to fix it. The brackets are fragile, although they don't break that much.
